Wien

In the morning I got up before Eva and met her Aunt in the kitchen. We managed to have a conversation using a mix of bad German and bad English which ended successfully in breakfast and hot tea for me. Right on. Once Eva woke up we got started on what was to be the most miserable day of the trip.

It had been raining off and on ever since we had passed the Wachau region yesterday, but this day started off OK; it was not too cold and not too wet when we visited Schönbrunn Castle around noon. It was very nice but we did not stay long as Eva really wanted to show me the older parts of the town center. To save time we jumped on the subway train to go down to the next station where the car was parked. Since we didn't pay for a ticket on the train, we could have been in trouble if caught. Eva said the crime of being a "Black Rider" was taken quite seriously so she was freaking out a little as I sat on the train practicing my German ("Ich bin ein Schwarzfahrer") aloud. "Schwarz" means "black"....

We got to the car ok, but as we were driving towards the old town center the weather turned much worse. It was raining steadily, very gray, and cold. We spent the next couple of hours walking around places I am sure are very wonderful and beautiful but to be honest all I cared about was the fact that I was cold, wet and miserable. Finally Eva quit torturing me and we headed back to her aunt's house. The damage had been done however: in terms of historic buildings and general atmosphere, Vienna is my least favorite city in Europe.

On the way home we stopped to see another of Eva's old friends, Christina, at a coffeeshop. I was still pretty miserable so I just sipped my hot chocalate and tried to warm up while they caught up on things.

Later that night we went to see a band called Die Moulinettes whom we had heard being interviewed on the radio the previous night as we were driving into Vienna. The song they played was rather catchy so we went to their show at Flex. It was a fun garage-pop kind of band from Bavaria and they put on such a good show that we decided to buy their CD before heading home for the night.
