Maui, Hawaii, July 1998

We stayed at the Aston Maui Lu in Kihei

Here's the view from the hotel room, the ocean is just beyond the tree line.
This is the view looking inland. It was cloudy inland most of the stay, but always warm and gorgeous anyhow.
This is the resort pool. We didn't spend a lot of time there, actually. But it was a nice pool. It had a really deep end, but no diving board unfortunately.

On the second day, we went snorkeling at Molokini crater. That's a half sunken volcanic crater off of the west coast. Unfortunately I didn't get any underwater pictures (it was amazing! absolutely wonderful, multitudes of bizarre sea critters), but here's a really cool ship we saw on our way back to port. These guys were moving!
And this is a shot of me on the boat. The Aston Maui Lu resort is a little north (to the left) on the shoreline in the background.
The third day we drove a big circle around the island perimeter. At one point along the north shore we pulled over at looked over the cliffs at the ocean. The water is such an amazing color! Anyhow, we noticed this geyser near the water's edge and climbed down to get a better look. It was all solid lava rock, with this hole in it. When the tide and waves built up enough water, the geyser would blow.  This was a cool place, with the lava formations, the uncommonly blue water and the geyser going off every few minutes.
See, the geyser made me smile!

On the south east side of the island is a place called Seven Pools. This is where a bunch of successive waterfalls carve deep pools in the rock. It's very picturesque.
Here's Eva as were walking towards the pools. I dig those trees! And one of the best thing about Maui?
No snakes!
It started sprinkling a little, still nice and warm though!
A kindly native showed us the way when we got lost.
Here's a view looking inland at some of the waterfalls. The picture doesn't really do the place justice. It's really big and went on for a long ways.

Here's a view looking back to where the waterfalls lead to the ocean. We're pretty far up at this point, probably 7 or 8 stories high.

I noticed a waterfall that Eva and I could climb behind.
You can't really see us when we're behind the waterfall. So you'll have to trust me on this one.

You can't pass up seven pools without taking a dip! At least Eva couldn't.

Back in civilization, we had dinner at the resort and watched a hula show.

On the beach at the resort, there was this little totem pole mound where we took some final pictures before heading back to the dreaded North American continent.
