I Shot Andy Warhol (1996) Mary Harron's portrait of Valerie Solanos, with a great performance by Lily Taylor.
Run Lola Run (1999) Mainstream but nicely done German flick by Tom Twyker, with Franka Potente.

Near Dark (1987) Kathryn Bigelow's underrated psychedelic vampire road movie.
River's Edge (1986) Murder saga with Dennis Hopper, Crispin Glover, Keanu Reeves.
Tchao Pantin (1983) Gloomy French drama by Claude Berri, set in Paris' drug subculture, with Coluche in a rare dramatic role.
Kiss Daddy Good Night (1987) Notable not so much for overall quality but for Uma Thurman's performance in her first movie role.
Anguish Surprising, multi-layered overlooked slasher gem from Spanish art film director Bigas Luna. Homage to surrealist filmmaker Luis Bunuel.

Straw Dogs (1971) Violent masterpiece by Sam Peckinpah, with Dustin Hoffman.
Panic in Needle Park (1971) Al Pacino's disturbing, stark and touching excellent first movie, a tragedy of urban drug addiction.
The Little Girl who Lives Down the Lane (1976) Controversial piece with Jodie Foster, Martin Sheen.
Cruising (1980) Al Pacino. Interesting suspense thriller set in the hardcore gay scene. Notable title song "When I close my eyes I see blood".
The Tenant Polanski suspense film themed around slow mental degradation, featuring Isabelle Adjani.
 

 

Sixties

Blow-Up (1967) Michelangelo Antonioni's ultimate mod-(ernist) flick, feat. Vanessa Redgrave, David Hemmings, Sarah Miles, Verushka.
Repulsion (1965) Another captivating drama by Roman Polanski, with Catherine Deneuve.
The Collector (1965) By William Wyler. Excellent British suspense character study, nominated for 2 academy awards, won 2 best actor awards in Cannes.
